Brendan Gleeson is Irish. Don Cheadle is not. But that’s not stopping the two of them from heading off to Ireland together to make The Guard, a comedy-thriller that, according to Production Weekly, will be directed by John Michael McDonagh, who previously wrote the screenplay for the Heath Ledger vehicle Ned Kelly.

PW has no more details on the project, being that it was announced via Twitter, so we’ll have to wait and see just what kind of trouble Gleeson and Cheadle can cook up together on the Emerald Isle. Gleeson previously starred in In Bruges for McDonagh’s brother, Martin McDonagh, which could mean even more promising things than usual. Given that he’ll be out of the Harry Potter series pretty soon, it’s always good to see him keeping on with work. And Cheadle, of course, is welcome in whatever he wants to do– yes, that includes.

The film is about Tom, a bewitching blues-jazz singer (Friend). Sadly, since his wife passed away, Tom can no longer sing nor smile. He spends his nights in the hotel room where they first met, waiting for her phone call that will never come. Tom hardly sees anyone except his best friend George, the hotel desk clerk. One of these nights, a girl, running away from an insistent pursuer, in the rush she stumble into Tom’s room and locks herself in his bathroom. As mysterious as her mathematical name, Pi (Poesy) asks Tom to sing a lullaby to comfort her. And as Tom thought he would never sing to an audience again, he begin to sing… to this stranger girl behind his closed bathroom door. From this magical moment on, night after night, Tom and Pi open up their hearts through the closed bathroom door. And day after day, thanks to a black teenager William, a slam poetry singer Tom took under his wing, Tom brings his bookshop back to life and goes back on stage to be reborn in music. With a whole new life to share with others – and the help of his benevolent cupid George – Tom will eventually find a way to Pi and puzzle out her mystery…

Christine Vachon of Killer Films is reuniting with Far From Heaven producer Jean-Charles Levy to produce a new project: Lullaby for Pi, the romantic drama from director Benoit Philippon.  According to Variety, the film stars Rupert Friend and Clemence Poesy. Kevin DeWalt of Minds Eye Entertainment is also producing. Friend plays a jazz singer so traumatized by the death of his wife that he loses the ability to sing. Enter Pi, a mysterious woman played by Poesy. Shooting begins today in Saskatchewan, Canada.
