A Little Trip to Heaven is an American/Icelandic thriller and drama film from ´05, Baltasar Kormákur is the Icelandic director of The Sea. Produced by Sigurjón Sighvatsson.

The film is entirely shot in Iceland. Icelandic musician Mugison composed and played the music, except the song A Little Trip to Heaven which is originally by Tom Waits though preformed by Mugison. The release date was December 26, 2006 in Iceland.

The film starts with three unusually staged vehicular crashes. These accidents are filmed with stark professional beauty. One of these accidents involves a city bus.

Holt (Forest Whitaker) gives a speech to the passengers, some of whom may have climbed on after the accident looking to get in on a possible lawsuit against the city. In that speech Holt plays both good cop and bad cop, sounding more like Mamet style grit, than an insurance adjuster dry duty. Nearly all the passengers shuffle off the bus because of it.

Holt’s boss (Peter Coyote) quickly drops an assignment to investigate the death of a petty scam artist in remote and crumbling North Hastings, Minnesota. It seems that Kelvin Anderson died after driving his car into a tunnel wall and his body was burned to a crisp. The local police are convinced it is an open and shut case, as Kevin’s drivers license is found, the plates on the car match and his sister Isold lives on the other side of the tunnel.

Because the body is unidentifiable Holt is immediately suspicious and Isold (Julie Stiles), the beneficiary of the one million dollar policy, is very nervous and wasn’t even suspecting her brother´s visit. Isold´s husband Fred is ominously cheerful and nearly all of his body language is vaguely threatening. Fred has wife-beater written all over him.

Holt digs up a number of dirty secrets, as he investigates things and sympathizes with the plight of crushing poverty, which defines the lives of Fred, Isold and their 6 year old son (Alfred Harmsworth).

It was a warm feeling to have Forest Whitaker in Iceland in that time.
